Our Mission
St. James’ Church is an intercultural fellowship serving Jesus Christ in the Fair Haven community.
We are:
Episcopal
Episcopal means “governed by bishops.” To us this is more than just the name of our denomination. As part of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut and the worldwide Anglican Communion, we live out our faith in Jesus Christ with accountability in community. We do so within the life of our own congregation and in fellowship with other churches around the world.
Evangelical
Evangelical means “bringing the good news.” We understand the message of God’s salvation of our sinful world through Jesus of Nazareth to be the best news imaginable, and we cannot help but tell it out! We believe in the triune God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—as revealed in the Bible. We look for the fruits of faith in Jesus Christ by the transformation of individual lives in conformity with the will of God. We hold to the doctrines of the church expressed in her historical creeds. We believe the Bible to be the inspired Word of God written and affirm its teaching for all aspects of life, including marriage, family, work and church.
Intercultural
Intercultural means “mutuality between cultures.” At St. James’ Church we are responding to God’s call to be a house of prayer for all nations. In our mixed neighborhood of Fair Haven Heights we bring together Africans, African-Americans, Anglo-Americans and Hispanic-Americans and others through fellowship in Christ. With worship services in both Spanish and English, and regular bilingual worship, we have members from ten or more nationalities at any given time.
